Staff Favorites

If you’re going to have Robert Parker or Stephen Tanzer over for dinner, selecting a wine they’ve rated highly will be a nice choice. However, when you’re buying wines for yourself, we’d love to see you find wines that match up your unique palate and pocketbook. We have a large staff of friendly and knowledgeable wine professionals that taste hundreds of wines each week. They can put you in touch with bottles that you are likely to love, often at a much lower cost than the highly-rated gems that often see a run-up in price and frequent availability issues. Like any great group of opinionated professionals, our staff has varied tastes themselves. Often our customers will find a particular staff member with a style that corresponds to their own. That concept works extremely well in our retail stores, and this section is our effort to bring you the same online. Don’t get us wrong, we love the highly rated wines from the press and will continue to offer them, but we think you’re missing out if you’re not augmenting those selections with picks from our excellent staff. Here are their favorites. (Click on a name to see their other selections - or to drop them a line.) Cheers!

2017 Baron de Montfaucon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Reviwer Picture By: Mandana Tourani | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Amazing depth and structure with gripping yet approachable tannin. This elegant wine is beautifully textured and gives away ripe blackberries, dark cocoa powder and a touch of spice. It is a powerful, bold wine but the balance and elegance of it makes it just the right Châteauneuf Du Pape.

2017 Guy Farge "Harmonie" Cornas
Reviwer Picture By: John Majeski | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Someone once called a Cornas wine 'a lorry driver, not a ballerina'. Well, my answer would be 'why can't a ballerina drive a lorry?' This superlative wine demonstrates the sinuous grace of a dancer with the supple ability to shift into high gear as the rich, savory fruit unveils its telltale charms in the glass. A Cornas of poise and character, showcasing the excellent marriage of fruit and oak, and the deft touch of a true winemaker who works, lives and breathes the air in the vineyards. Nothing exaggerated, just pure and refined and in a word, delicious.

2018 Domaine de Millet Colombard-Ugni Blanc Côtes de Gascogne Blanc
Reviwer Picture By: John Majeski | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
There are wines that make you 'think' and wines that you 'drink', the former contemplative wines consisting of great subtlety and finesse, demanding a measure of quiet reverence as you approach them, genuflecting each step of the way. Great, wonderful, but no, at an outdoor picnic or loud party such wines are out of place. So reach for a case of this super-drinkable, crisp and welcoming white, made from Colombard and Ugni Blanc, some of the same fruit-luscious grapes that make Armagnac and brandies. Aromas and flavors of white peaches, acacia blossoms, fresh-sliced green apples and citrus fruits all play a part in this expressive, invigorating and thirst-quenching wine. Seriously good, and priced to sell!

2017 Artadi Viñas de Gain
Reviwer Picture By: Andrew Tobin | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
When our buyer Kirk Walker tells you to try something new on the shelf, you should probably just do it. Don't ask the price, just give it a shot, it's always worth your time, and such was the scenario when I approached this Artadi. Rioja without being Rioja the wine has a nice little sweet citrus lift right off the bat that settles towards those classic dusty, fresh leather notes with mulled spiced which reminds me of Christmas markets in France with their large vats of mulled wine to help ward off the cold. The palate is rich and robust with beautifully soft tannin, savory pepper and leather, and a soft elegant finish that is as laden with floral notes as it is with savory spice and sweet fruit. When I found out the price of this sucker I was even more shocked, make sure to add this to your list of Spanish wines to try!

2016 Cà Viola "Brichet" Barbera d'Alba
Reviwer Picture By: John Downing | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Beppe Caviola made his name as a top tier consulting winemaker but has more recently put the majority of his focus on crafting his own wines from his winery in the Dogliani zone of Piemonte. This classy Barbera is sourced from old vine plots in Montelupo Albese(a small hillside town outside of Alba)and really delivers at the price. It's aged in large barrels and offers a fresh, silky palate of blackberry and black cherry fruit with ample acidity and length on the finish. A versatile red that pairs with a wide range of foods.

2017 Damilano Barbera d'Asti
Reviwer Picture By: John Downing | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
The Damilano Family is one of the oldest wine producers in the Langhe and they remain steadfastly committed to the region. More recently they rented an outstanding parcel in the Asti zone where the grapes for this delicious Barbera are harvested. The 2017 is quite rich and concentrated thanks to the warmth of the vintage and showcases delicious currant and red berry flavors and finishes with loads of fruit and solid acidity that adds freshness and length. This drinks nicely now and is a wonderful daily red that can be enjoyed on its own but is best with food.

2018 Passionate Wines "Del Mono" Tinto Tupungato
Reviwer Picture By: Kirk Walker | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Some of the most delicious and fun wines coming from Argentina are associated with Matias Michelini. There is a carefree easiness to his wines, especially this. They are meticulously made but not uptight. Just look at this label, now it says a lot about me, but this label is irresistible. The wine is a blend of Malbec and Syrah. When was the last time you saw a 50/50 blend of the two? This wine is about hanging out with friends and having a good time. There is plenty of fruit, but it is not a fruit bomb. There is a unique mix of red fruits and berries, look at the blend as well as a fun mix of herbal notes and spice. There is enough tannin to give it oomph without it needing food. That being said, red meat is what this wants, tri-tip or burgers you get the vibe. Quick note it is a little reductive. pour a half glass, screw the top back on and give it a good shake, open a proceed to have a good time.

Glen Moray 23 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
Reviwer Picture By: Jackson Lee | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
This one hit the nose with big oak spice up front with underlying iodine followed closely by almond Rocca and Bartlett pear notes, as the heat died down a bit green banana and creamed brown sugar. The palate on this was exceptionally smooth at the beginning, leading up to a slow burn that enticed me into another sip. The oak spice still made its presence known with marzipan, golden brown sugar, and candied orange all seamlessly flowing together. The finish was medium length and culminated in that pleasant, warm tingling sensation that made me want to keep going back for more, truly a great pour for the price.

2018 Passionate Wines "Del Mono" Tinto Tupungato
Reviwer Picture By: John Sumners | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Fresh wild raspberry and blackberry leap from the glass in this expressive and fun red from Tupungato in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. Floral notes of lavender and rose petal chime in accompanied by sandalwood, potpourri spice, oregano, rosemary, and pink peppercorn. It's lively, bright, focused, and decidedly medium-bodied on the palate with just a whisper of tannin on the finish. A wonderful weekday red at a guilt-free price, this will be a versatile companion on the table for anything from roast chicken to sausage pizza to portabello burgers to marinated flank steak.

2017 Xanadu Estate Chardonnay Margaret River Western Australia
Reviwer Picture By: Thomas Smith | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Xanadu has been on a hot streak over the last year. After winning the most coveted prize in Australia for their 2016 Cabernet, they have followed up with a 2017 Estate Chardonnay, which I have no doubt is the best they have ever made. This offers up an incredible bouquet of aromas with an array of white flowers, touches of lemon curd, and subtle spice notes. On the palate, this is all about big, rich, mouthwatering fruit that showcase a ton of powerful finesse. This is bold Chardonnay at its finest. Margaret River continues to be one of the best places in the world for Chardonnay, and Xanadu clearly deserves a spot as a marquee producer of the region.

1998 Glenburgie 21 Year Old "Old Particular" Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
Reviwer Picture By: Jackson Lee | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
This bottling had a certain yin and yang going on. Sweet and sour on the nose, sweet and savory on the palate. The first note to hit my nose was Japanese Ume plum followed by pencil shavings, tropical fruit, whoppers, and lemon bars. The palate was quite pleasant texturally with an oily, mouth coating effect that elicited a medicinal peaty note paired with honeysuckle, artificial green apple flavoring and a savory, hardwood charcoal-like note on the back end. The finish felt a bit thin compared to the initial texture but lingered on with an almost mango chocolate malt note.

2018 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawke's Bay
Reviwer Picture By: Thomas Smith | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Hawke’s Bay Syrah continues to be a source of extraordinary wines for people in the know. Wines with tiny production like Trinity Hill’s Homage and Bilancia La Colline Syrahs have been nailing down massive scores over the last few years and making a name for themselves as worthy of world class respect. Enter Te Mata’s Bullnose Syrah. Made from the oldest Syrah vines in Hawke’s Bay, Te Mata’s Syrah vines had an excellent growing season that has resulted in a powerful, concentrated wine that may be the finest Syrah I’ve ever had from New Zealand. The aromas show classic varietal character with savory notes, earth, black pepper and lavender. This gives way to a beautifully decadent palate with black cherry, sour plum, followed up with exotic spices over resonating tannin. Focused and powerful, this is remarkably accessible right now, but sure to be even better in the coming years. And with identical scores to last year’s Trinity Hill Homage, this wine is a steal at half the price.

I thought this wine cost a lot more when I first tasted it. Round and red with lush floral notes that drape over soft sweet red earth and matorral. This is Serious Wine, that scales up wonderfully to most levels of food pairings, but possibly works best with board of good cheese and fine meats

One of my absolute favorite values in this store, Passionate Wines', "Del Mono" is as crushable as wine can be, with smoky fresh herbs and dark fruits over a slight spice - almost ginger note, that is the most interesting part of the whole thing. This is an incredibly happy bottle of wine that is perfect for BBQs ,steak dinners, burgers, or grilled asparagus.

2018 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawke's Bay
Reviwer Picture By: Andrew Tobin | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
We are fortunate in our ability here at K&L to experience great wines on a regular basis, it's both informative and exciting because you get introduced to bottles you wouldn't normally look at on your own. Syrah from regions other than France don't pop up in my life as often as I would like, and there is nothing more exciting than when you get handed a random glass of something and fall in love before knowing anything about it. Bullnose is such a bright and focused bottle of wine, it jumps out of the glass with dark fruit, purple flowers, anise, clove, black pepper with a hint of menthol and praline. The palate is luscious and decadent. The fruit is more pointed than on the nose so the wine doesn't feel overly opulent, rather more balanced and lively. Blackberry, baking spice, pepper, savory soy and violet. Our Syrah fans need to try this bottle, and if you aren't a Syrah drinker, well you're going to want to start!

2018 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawke's Bay
Reviwer Picture By: Kirk Walker | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
This is a wine that you need to pay attention to. This bottling of Syrah proclaims that Hawkes Bay is one of the great Terroirs for Syrah in the world. I cannot wait to try this every year. I cannot wait to buy this every year. Bright, savory, and textural this wine is a pleasure for the sense. Bright, sappy red fruits that pop and are lifted and have depth. Behind the fruit is a pleasant smoky and savoriness. The tannins are polished and fine and there is an easiness to the texture, not quite supple but almost. There is a freshness to this, there is a lot going on here but it is never fatiguing, in fact I found myself going back to it, again and again, try to get more and finding it.

2017 Xanadu Estate Chardonnay Margaret River Western Australia
Reviwer Picture By: Chris DePaoli | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
A woody, citrus, tropical good time in a glass, this is more complex that most other offerings at the price point, with some serious flair, but also top tier drinkability. The sandalwood really pops out on the nose and gets a fun dancing partner in the lemon custard notes on the palate.

2018 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawke's Bay
Reviwer Picture By: Chris DePaoli | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
New Zealand's Hawke's Bay produces a handful of world class wines, but none so thoroughly prove the worth of place as the Bullnose. Complex, rich, opulent, and elegant, the nose is unreal, with flavors layered on top of each other to incredible depth. Ripe strawberry, rose petals, iron, and almond cake all come crashing out of the glass in a glorious melange that serves perfect introduction to the cheerful palate; which frames the continuation of flavors with strong acidity and polished, satin tannins. Just fire.

2008 Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne
Reviwer Picture By: Diana Turk | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
This gorgeous vintage brut by Laurent-Perrier has been much anticipated, as it was released behind other grand marques, with reason. 2008 is a sharp, tightly-wound vintage, and while it will prove to be one of the best in years, the wines benefit from a bit longer aging. This has more chalk than we usually see expressed in L-P’s Champagnes, thanks to 50% Chardonnay, although there is a rich undertone of berried Pinot Noir as well. Fresh with minerality and complex through the palate, the 2008 Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne also shows an extraordinarily long, dry (8g dosage) finish. I was a big fan of their 2007 release, but this vintage outshines even that beauty.

2016 Thistledown "Cunning Plan" Shiraz Langhorne Creek
Reviwer Picture By: Diana Turk | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
This is really good, truly “Shiraz-y” Shiraz, with black cherry fruit, a plush palate, and a hit of pepper and cocoa on the finish. South Australia is doing some magical things with their cooler Mediterranean climate, keeping acidity bright while retaining satisfying depth and texture, plus showing off loads of deliciously dark fruit. And what is this amazing price?! I’ve already bought several bottles.

2018 Te Mata "Bullnose" Syrah Hawke's Bay
Reviwer Picture By: Greg St. Clair | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
The nose of this wine was scintillating…and I don’t use that word for New World Syrah wines very often, in fact I think never. Waves of coffee, chocolate, cassis and combine with the subtlest of sweet oak (and I’m very sensitive to oak) while still showing hints of spice and earth. On the palate the wine is so well balanced, rich, polished and ultrafine tannins to give it an extraordinarily smooth presence. The wine has so many different flavors but seem to combine into one, so it is its own flavor rather than a combination and it is delicious. Long, lifting finish, richly textured so supple and easy yet a certain tensile strength to it…it is really wonderful.

2017 Walter Hansel "Cuvée Alyce" Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Reviwer Picture By: Diana Turk | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Sourced from their highest altitude vineyard, Walter Hansel’s “Cuvee Alyce” is a stunning example of how lovely and layered Russian River Chardonnay can be. Pear and green apple fruit shine through, while a good spine of acidity keeps the palate fresh amidst brioche toastiness. This veers toward Burgundian territory, but is a winner for the “buttery, oaky” crowd as well. The 2017 release is classic California Chardonnay, balanced and textured, with heft that will age well and a lightness that pairs beautifully with food.

1988 L'Encantada 30 Year Old "Domaine Le Frêche #17" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)
Reviwer Picture By: Diana Turk | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
Wow. There is a lot going on with Le Frêche #17, with lively cinnamon spice underscored by leather notes on the nose and velvety texture and red berry fruit through the palate, to a nutty finish that never seems to end. Hints of orange and ginger come through as well. This packs a punch but is somehow easy drinking, inexplicably both elegant and rustic, and comes alive with a bit of water. While the rest of us spent 1988 dancing to Milli Vanilli, these “mystery” producers were making magic. Don’t miss this classic yet extraordinary Armagnac.

2017 Ferraton Père et Fils "Lieu Dit Bonneveau" Saint-Joseph
Reviwer Picture By: Greg St. Clair | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
There's so much elegance in this nose, it just says balance from the get go, it's got an overall savory character, more umami than outright fruit. On the palate once again it's balance, elegance and then what I really appreciate in Syrah based wines is lift, that buoyant character that makes the wine stand-up and standout. It's almost as if you can feel the sunlight, the purity of the flavors more flavor facets than roundness that add to the complexity. Certainly my favorite of the Ferraton's I tried, I look forward to drinking this in the coming years.

2017 Ferraton Père et Fils "Lieu Dit Les Picheres" Crozes-Hermitage Rouge
Reviwer Picture By: Greg St. Clair | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
The nose of this wine tells you it is Syrah, but it's whispered until it hits your palate, then you know it's Syrah. On the palate there's a bit of grip and grit, slightly rough and tumble. There's lots of wine lurking in the background for the patient.

2017 Ferraton Père et Fils "Lieu-Dit Patou" Cornas
Reviwer Picture By: Greg St. Clair | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
The nose of this wine gives me the sense of darkness, it's brooding bass notes, a cauldron of boiling tar accented with hints of spice. On the palate this wine shows lots of structure, and a bit of grit. The finish boils up the dense tar and repeats the spicy notes and the tannins let you know this is a wine for your cellar...but it will reward your aging.

2017 Ceres "Composition" Pinot Noir Bannockburn Central Otago
Reviwer Picture By: Greg St. Clair | Review Date: 1/21/2020 | Send Email
The nose on this wine is savory, it shows more earth and stemmy character at first then the fruit joins in the back but never takes over it just supports and adds dimension to the nose. On the palate the wine is supple but with very good acidity, lots of lift and some well-defined tannins. Flavors are less fruity and a combination of smoke, porcini and then some dark fruit behind. On the finish the wine shows more tannic structure as the suppleness tightens up. Quite a wine for the price.

The nose of this wine is tropical, it’s full of pineapple aromatics and subtle toasty oak aromas. On the palate the wine shows good weight and a creamy richness while still having good acidity to add lift. The finish shows more complexity with hints of nutmeg, sandalwood joining with the tropical, toasty, lees filled character to give the wine a richer feel in more than one sense.

2018 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Blanc
Reviwer Picture By: Lauren Seward | Review Date: 1/20/2020 | Send Email
At $10, this is a mighty fine white blend out of a lesser-known subregion of the Rhone. Zippy and fresh with hints of stonefruit, wet rock, and a touch of hay, the Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Blanc is not to be dismissed as a go-to white. Although the region was originally part of the Languedoc-Rousillon, the whites of Costières de Nîmes are more akin to those of the Rhone, and was assigned to it in the mid-2000s. This blend of Rousanne, Grenache Blanc, and Viongier is extremely friendly with dishes like sushi, cheese, and lighter pastas.

Markos Markovitis Winery for those in the know is the famed Chateau Pegasus. The name was changed recently to reflect the family that has been tending these vineyards in Polla Nera in Northern Greece for decades. Along with the name change, the then-named Chateau was also the first organically farmed vineyard in Greece. This Xinomavro has a robust nose when it is first opened, so allow time for it to breathe. Once it opens up red berries such a redcurrant, rosehip and hibiscus tea leap from the glass. Med acidity rolls on the tongue and a lightly tannic, textural feel of fortune plums and friar plums grip on the side of the cheeks.

1995 L'Encantada 24 Year Old "Lous Pibous #146" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

The nose on this is big and evocative. As soon as the liquid hit the bottom of the glass, bright wisps of caramel apple and golden raisins seemed to form a halo around my nostrils. Getting up close and personal with it reminded me of a Jamaican rum with a bit of burnt rubber, but with a sweet note on the uptake, like milk chocolate. As it became less volatile the green apple and dark brown sugar were more prominent players with the slightest bit of cinnamon hiding out in the back. The palate hits you like a ton of bricks; it starts off soft and smooth with a bright, orchard fruit tone but then a lidocaine tingling starts to ramp up and a bit of oak spice comes in after, taking you into the finish where cherry cola and sweet plums linger for what feels like a millennia.

The addition of water tones down the rubber bits and enhances the brown sugar, and some red fruit tones on the nose. The palate is rounded out and takes on a silkier characteristic, again with the sweeter, darker notes coming forward. This is a hard bottle to pass up, and I’d recommend grabbing a bottle if you’re looking for an elegant yet robust Armagnac.

2013 Miguel Merino Reserva Rioja
Reviwer Picture By: Chris DePaoli | Review Date: 1/17/2020 | Send Email
Consistently one of K&L's best direct imports (and also one of the best dollar-for-dollar buys), Miguel Merino makes Rioja how Rioja should be made. Rich and bright, with solid lines connecting red fruit on the front end to the classic, dusty, sweet earth finish, and plenty exotic spice layered on throughout. This is a versatile pairing for food, with an incredibly long finish. Drinking it now is hedonism at its finest, but given some time it has the potential to do great things. Buy by the case to experience both.

2017 Centovigne "Della Motta" Rosso

This rosso is made up of 100% Nebbiolo!!! I opened this one on Sunday night and immediately poured it into a decanter and let it open for an hour. There is plenty of fruit, good acidity, soft tannin structure, some minerality, and a lengthy finish. The combination of blue/dark fruit and the black cherry comes from the Nebbiolo. I also find some tar and roses on the lengthy finish. Two thumbs up !

1995 L'Encantada 24 Year Old "Lous Pibous #146" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Why spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars on a 23 year-old bourbon, when this 24 year-old comes in under $200? Bottles from this estate continue to impress me, and this one might take the cake. There is a lot to love here, as that ultra-high-proof spirit only concentrated as it aged. Banana, dulce de leche, ample stone fruit and hearty toasted oak complete with allspice and vanilla come loud and fast like an ensemble band almost too big for the stage they're on. It holds a fine line, just this side of overwhelming; all its aggressive, hedonistic layers of flavor work perfectly. There's even an underlying current of shortbread, praline and lemon skin that round out the waxy, sumptuous body, showing it was built for more than just brute strength. With a couple of drops of water, apricot blossoms open up like the first bloom of spring. This bottle shows a gentler, more sophisticated side- another dimension to the party animal that I saw at first glance. In addition to the bourbon geeks, this style speaks to a lot of fans of cask strength spirits from brandy to whisky to the less funky rums. There's a little (or a lot of) something for everyone.
