2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet
Review Date: 01-14-2020
When Puligny “hits,” it has this refined sense of pristine mountain water flowing over smooth stones, and orchard fruit picked at its peak of ripeness, all rolled into a fine white wine. The 2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin has all the above-mentioned attributes in spades. This wine is pure and fresh with mineral notes woven throughout its orchard fruit-dominated core. A truly enjoyable white that personifies what Puligny-Montrachet should strive to attain.

2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chassagne-Montrachet
Review Date: 01-14-2020
A stunner. With an array of stone fruits and peach notes, this gorgeous offering is absolutely singing right now. It’s a wonderful example of a fine Chassagne.

2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Meursault
Review Date: 01-14-2020
As much as I love the reds from Drouhin, I think that in 2017 they’ve been outclassed by the whites. We’ve spoken at length about the quality of the 2017 vintage for whites, and when you taste what Drouhin has accomplished in their village-level offerings from Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet, you will be amazed. The 2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Meursault is a critic favorite and a full-bodied offering that displays citrus, stone, and creamy oak flavors. A richly textured wine, it has all the marks of a fine Meursault, and a great finish.

2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin
Review Date: 01-14-2020
A standard-bearer for the appellation. Loaded with purple fruit, cola notes, spice, and a touch of minerality, this sleek and sexy offering is exactly what one wants from a Gevrey-Chambertin.

2017 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Villages
Review Date: 01-14-2020
I have long been an admirer of the wines of Joseph Drouhin. They have always been elegantly structured, with beautiful fruit—never tart or overbearing. The 2017s from Joseph Drouhin are an exciting set of wines. They provide ample value, too, from entry-level reds to expressive village-level whites. Located in the heart of the town of Beaune, Joseph Drouhin has a winemaking history that dates back to 1880. Like many négociant houses, they both own vineyards as well as contract fruit. But their adherence to excellence shows through in every wine they produce, whether at the domaine or négociant level. And this wine clearly demonstrates what the Côte de Beaune is all about. Meatier than the Côte de Nuits, with a touch more earth and darker fruit flavors, this is a robust red that slowly unfurls on the palate.

2016 Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Rouge
Review Date: 01-14-2020
The 2016 Faiveley Pinot Noir is in a wonderful place currently. Always a meaty wine, it has really opened up of late. Dark fruits cede to wonderful aromas of macerated berries and cola notes. The palate is robust and feels very Côte de Nuits, with a subtle nod towards Gevrey. This is a wonderful Bourgogne rouge, and easily drinks like a wine double the price.

2017 Chateau de la Maltroye Bourgogne Aligote
Review Date: 01-14-2020
The 2017 Château de la Maltroye Aligote comes from one of my favorite producers, famous for crafting some of the best Chassagne-Montrachet. The Aligote here is outstanding, with the leanness and licorice notes one expects from an Aligote as well as the zesty acidity. As the climate has warmed, Aligotes have become a bit more forgiving. This is a wonderful example of that progress.

2017 Vignerons des Terres Secretes Macon Milly-Lamartine Blanc
Review Date: 01-14-2020
We have been lucky to establish a strong relationship with Vignerons des Terres Secretes. A cooperative much in the same vein as La Chablisienne in Chablis, they are producing extraordinary values given their capacity. The 2017 Lamartine Blanc leans more toward the orchard fruit spectrum than citrus, with a tad more structure and depth. This wine has a more serious and cerebral feel.

2017 Vignerons des Terres Secretes Macon Verze "Croix Jarrier"

A great example of the quality of the 2017 vintage for whites. Loaded with fresh citrus fruit and crackling minerality, this bright and zesty offering is a fun and fabulous Mâcon white that easily merits case-worthy purchases.

2018 Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis "Domaine Sainte Claire"
Review Date: 01-14-2020
A longtime favorite and perennial great bargain, this is classic Chablis in character, with a tangy feel and flavors of lemon and yellow fruits. Good length and structure make this is a buy-today, drink-tonight Chablis that excels as an under-$20 value.

2017 Jacques Bavard St-Aubin 1er Cru "Frionnes"
Review Date: 01-14-2020
From a large plot situated on the western side that is renowned for producing powerful whites. The nose here is incredibly seductive, with aromas of yellow pears and Golden Delicious apples, while the palate is super smooth with spice, stone fruit, and an almost waxy feel. The wine is very rich and textured, with complexity and depth rarely found in a white Burgundy for under $50. This is a wonderful wine and a great insight into the heights Jacques Bavard is achieving.

2017 Jacques Bavard St-Romain Blanc "Sous le Château"
Review Date: 01-14-2020
This feels very much like a baby Corton-Charlemagne. The nose is rich, with tropical notes and drawn butter aromas that give way to a palate packed with flavors of mango, papaya, and pear that mingle with smooth tannins and rich oak nuances. This is a rich, full-bodied white that drinks like a Grand Cru for a fraction of the cost.

2017 Jacques Bavard Santenay Blanc "Sous la Roche"
Review Date: 01-14-2020
A flinty nose, as well as an abundance of stone fruits. Notes of butterscotch give way to green fig and fresh herbs. The finish is energetic and lively, with a splash of acidity, and then a long caress of the palate, as the flavors slowly fade one by one.

2017 Jacques Bavard Auxey-Duresses Blanc "Les Clous"
Review Date: 01-14-2020
This starts off with a delicate nose of pears, white flowers, and spice. The palate unfolds to reveal poached pear and orchard fruit flavors, along with a richly textured mouthfeel and an almost Meursault-like richness. If you’re looking for value in Burgundy, then Auxey-Duresses is the place you should be.

2017 Jacques Bavard Auxey-Duresses Rouge
Review Date: 01-14-2020
One of Burgundy’s hottest and most up-and-coming regions for values, Auxey-Duresses is known for being able to produce reds of impressive depth and character without breaking the bank—and the 2017 Jacques Bavard Auxey-Duresses Rouge is no exception. This wine has an abundance of black fruits, black tea, red apple, and fresh cherry flavors. The palate unwinds to reveal complex notes of fruit, coffee, and cola. This is a beautiful red that offers a deeper experience than the Bourgogne Rouge. If you’re looking for value in Burgundy, then Auxey-Duresses is the place you should be.

2017 Château de Chemilly Chablis
Review Date: 12-06-2019
This is a fantastic entry-level Chablis. Aromas of the ocean breeze, white flowers and citrus rise from the glass. The palate is electric with flavors of orchard fruits and citrus nicely buffered by racy acidity and crisp tannins. The wine is remarkably full-bodied with surprising richness and structure. The finish is outstanding with length and vibrancy. I really enjoyed this wine and will definitely be buying some for myself this holiday season.

2018 Bonpas "Croix de Bonpas" Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages
Review Date: 12-03-2019
I didn't think it was possible but I think I prefer the Croix de Bonpas to the Dame de Bonpas! The nose is absolutely enthralling with notes of raspberry kirsch, Baker's Chocolate, licorice and smoke while the palate is a seamless blend of red and black fruits and spice. The wine has great acidity and balance which allows the way to always be in complete harmony between the fruit, tannin, alcohol and sugar. This is an outstanding Cotes du Rhone and a steal at only $13.99. If you loved the Dame de Bonpas then you'll be absolutely infatuated with the Croix de Bonpas.

What a beautiful wine! The nose is absolutely intoxicating with floral and orchard fruit notes as well as a touch of wets stone and petrol. The palate is delightfully rich with cool orchard fruits and subtle spice notes while the finish echoes dried apricot notes. A balanced and nuanced Riesling that is capable of regaling the connoisseur and seducing the layman.

2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes-du-Rhône
Review Date: 11-13-2019
Easily one of the greatest values year-in-and-year-out in the Rhone Valley the 2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Rouge is a winner once again. This is basically "Baby Beaucastel" at an entry-level price. From the very first sniff from the glass the pedigree here is apparent, crackling red fruits, garrigue, spice and licorice notes dominate the nose while the palate is fresh, long and packed with spicy red fruit. This wine has amazing length and a dry, mouth-coating finish. An impressive wine that stands on its own and can easily age and mature over the next 15+ years to reveal greater depth and complexity.

2017 Sattler Zweigelt Burgenland
Review Date: 09-26-2019
In the past a lot of Austrian reds were hard and tannic. Not anymore. Most are lively, zesty, and easily approachable. The 2017 Erich Sattler Zweigelt is a delicious little red wine that way over-delivers, considering its price. The nose is loaded with red and black fruits and spice notes, and the palate is rich and inviting, with berry fruit, licorice, and Asian spice flavors. A prime match for pizza, pasta, or burgers, this wine is a great compromise when trying to decide between Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

One of my favorites Austrian reds right now, the 2017 Rosi Schuster Blaufränkisch starts off with heady aromas of sour cherry, black licorice, Amaro, and spice. On the palate, red fruits dominate, and then give way to a cool rush of menthol and spice. This wine is sleek and elegant, and can pair with a wide variety of cuisines.

2017 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Les Sétilles"
Review Date: 07-24-2019
The 2016 Setilles flew off our shelves thanks to a 91-point score and it happened to be one of the featured wines poured at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. However, I prefer the 2017. It is a bright, energetic white with zesty flavors and aromas of lemon, orchard fruits, and a touch of salinity. Perfectly balanced with just a hint of oak, this complex, everyday white should be snatched up by the case! Sourced 50/50 from Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, this is a stunning white wine value and a worthy successor to the delicious 2016!

2016 Domaine La Barroche "Signature" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Review Date: 03-07-2019
Young Julien Barrot of Domaine la Barroche is a name to remember, only in his 30s he is already becoming world-renowned for fashioning some of the greatest young Chateauneuf-du-Papes currently available in the market. The Signature is stunning from the very first sniff from the glass where aromas of Asian spice, marzipan, baker's chocolate and cassis liqueur all slowly rise from the glass. The palate is alive with flavors of blackberry and cassis jelly buffered by lively acidity and fine tannins. The finish is long and supple with spice and berry flavors slowly fading away in perfect harmony.

From the moment I brought the glass to my nose I knew I had something special here. 2005 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Review Date: 09-08-2017
The 2005 Lynch Bages Pauillac is exactly what you want from one of Bordeaux's premier properties. 2005 was a fantastic vintage in Bordeaux and the 2005 Lynch Bages is a monumental wine. Blood red in color with spice and scorched earth notes the palate slowly unwinds to savory berry fruit notes and fine, smooth tannins. Notes of black licorice and mocha complete the long, smooth finish. This is a classic Lynch Bages in every sense.

An up-and-coming winery, Hall vineyards is quickly gaining a reputation for making excellent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. Under the guidance of winemaker Steve Leveque and consulting winemaker David Ramey, Hall winery has made an outstanding 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark purple hue in the glass with notes of creosote, graphite, dark chocolate and creme de cassis. On the palate, the wine is dark and brooding with rich flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cocoa and mocha that all are balanced nicely against firm tannins and good acidity. The finish is long and lush and this wine was so enjoyable the last time had this at lunch I couldn't resist a second glass.
