1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac

100 points James Suckling: "What an amazing red. It's so very youthful with toasted oak, light vanilla, and dark berries such as currants and blueberries. Then it turns to mint. This is so fresh and intensely fruity. It lasts for minutes on your palate with each sip. It is so powerful yet elegant. It will improve for hundreds of years. I would still leave it in my cellar for five or ten years. If you need to drink it, decant it three to four hours in advance." 1982 Angélus, St-Emilion

Wine Spectator: "Medium-garnet in color, with a ruby center. Pretty floral, berry and dried cherry aromas. Medium-bodied, with tobacco and fruit flavors. (JS)" (11/1998) K&L Notes: A five star vintage, and "A great year for both Pomerol and St.Emilion," according to Decanter. Critics have noted that the 1982 Angélus, however, represents the château's earlier style, before changes in production were made in the mid-1980s.

1982 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the handful of perfect wines of the vintage, the La Mission still possesses a remarkably dense ruby/purple color with only a slight garnet and lightening at the edge. The fruit-dominated aromatics reveal lots of cassis, blueberry, scorched earth, black truffle, incense, graphite and high-class, unsmoked cigar tobacco-like notes. Still exhibiting remarkable concentration, enormous body, silky sweet tannin, and no perceptible acidity, the 1982 remains fresh, delineated and super-compelling...this modern day ...

1982 La Louviere, Graves

According to Robert Parker: "This wine has tasted fully mature since bottling, yet it has lost none of its sweet, creamy, curranty fruit or tobacco, herb-scented aromatics. Always a soft, low acid wine, it continues to provide delicious drinking in a supple style." (12/95)

1982 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a tour de force, and one of the all-time great Grand-Puy-Lacostes ever produced, as I hope the 2000 and 2005 will become. This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with sweet tannin, shocking concentration, and layers of fruit, this irresistible 1982 is still an adolescent in terms of its evolution. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. 1982 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Very aromatic, inviting nose of redcurrant, leather and tobacco. Intensely flavored and gripping, with a slightly raisiny singed plum character but also solid framing acidity that gives the wine a juicy quality. Quite fat and full. Finishes with superb structure and grip. (ST)" (08/2002) 92 points John Gilman: "Back in this era, it was not uncommon for estates to bottle a vintage over the course of some time, and the ’82 Calon has shown a bit of bot ...

1982 Magdelaine, St-Emilion

96 points Wine Spectator: "This has always been a gorgeous, sexy wine. Dark ruby-colored, with a slight garnet rim. Full-bodied, with loads of sweet fruit flavors and a lovely, long aftertaste of fresh fruit, floral, earth character. (JS)" (11/1998) 95 points John Gilman: "Back when I wrote the first piece on Château Magdelaine, I included a note on the very first bottle of the 1982 which I had crossed paths with from the estate. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "No tasting note provided." (12/1994) 93 points Vinous: "The 1982 Dom Pérignon Rosé is pretty, but it is also quite forward. Dried red cherries, crushed flowers and spices lift effortlessly from the glass. The 1982 still has good depth, but the flavor profile is now close to fully tertiary, so there is really nothing to be gained from further cellaring. The wine is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a silky finish. It appears to have hit full maturity, but it can easily be held in a cold cellar for another 10+ years. (RP)" (06/2009) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Built for aging. 100 points Decanter: "May Eliane de Lencquesaing had been at Pichon since 1978, so four years by the time the 1982 rolled around. The Merlot levels are a little higher than they are today (it was a favourite grape of her father's), but this flamboyant, fleshy style is exotic in all the right places. In fact it jumps out of the glass, with its caramel-edged sweet black fruits. The aromatics are still full-on wow, the fruits and tannins melded perfectly together. 1982 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

According to the winery, "the 1982 vintage was one of the longest and coolest growing seasons experienced here at Jordan." The result was perfectly balanced fruit. To maximize fruit potential, fermentation time was extended beyond the usual seven to ten days — to eighteen days! The Cabernet was blended with 15.5% Merlot to maintain the rich, fragrant nose that is classic Jordan. During barrel aging a higher fraction of French oak cooperage was used (60%), together with 40% American oak. Last tasted by the winery staff in June 2009, the wine showed "lean, ...

1982 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (bin soiled label)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have had perfect bottles of this cuvee, but, perplexingly, the bottles from my cellar tend to be broodingly backward and require plenty of coaxing. This huge wine is, in many ways, just as massive as Leoville Barton, but it possesses a greater degree of elegance as well as unreal concentration. Classic lead pencil, cassis, kirsch, cedar, and spice characteristics are abundant in both the nose and full-bodied flavors. The tannins are still there, and, at least from my cellar, this 1982 does not appear to have ch ...

People talk about Petrus or Le Pin as benchmarks for the year (I prefer Lafleur) but this wine from Certan de May is very, very impressive. It shows an amazing complexity and subtlety with wonderful aromas and flavors of flowers and berries. It's full body with refined tannis and clean finish. Decant and serve. 1982 Talbot, St-Julien

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. While fully mature, it should hold for another decade. (RP)" (06/2009) Jancis Robinson: "This wine was ...

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a crisp line of acidity, subtle notes of cedar and tar infusing the red berry fruit with a composed, structured finish with plenty of freshness and vigor. 90 points Vinous: "(50% cabernet sauvignon, 25% cabernet franc, 20% merlot and 5% petit verdot): Amber-tinged red. Captivating nose offers tertiary aromas of faded rose, orange peel and spicecake, along with delicate nuances of strawberry, raspberry and vanilla. That said, the 1982 is a great wine, no doubt because of the vintage rather than the winemaking at that time. A brilliant effort, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a sweet, flowery bouquet revealing plenty of creme de cassis, plum, and cherry notes, stunning concentration, a boatload of power, sweet tannins (the sweetest and easiest to taste among the St.-Juliens), and a long finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. Bid on this magnum of 1982 Mayacamas Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (92JG). John Gilman: "The 1982 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding wine in the making, with its low octane 12.5 percent alcohol level giving the wine great bounce and vivacity on the palate. The bouquet is starting to blossom beautifully, wafting from the glass in a deep and complex mix of black cherries, cigar ash, mountain soil tones, rose petals, allspice and hints of the black truffle to come with further bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a superb core of sappy fruit, excellent focus and grip, moderate tannins and outstanding length on the poised and perfectly balanced finish. This particular bottle had a bit of volatile acidity in evidence on both the nose and palate when first opened, but this blew off completely with thirty minutes in decanter. This wine still needs at least another five years in the cellar to completely peak, but it is getting close and

Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Vinous: "At its best, the 1982 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted from Bruno Giacosa. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, mint and hard candy give the wine its sensual, inviting personality. Medium in body, persistent and beautifully focused, the 1982 is a Riserva that speaks to power over finesse. Readers fortunate enough to own the 1982 will want to check in on their bottles.
