1988 Fitte et Laterrade 30 Year Old "Domaine Le Chaou" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Fitte et Laterrade is one of a new breed of micro-bottler that's becoming more prominent in this complex region. The incredibly diverse producers of Armagnac across Gascogne have previously not had many options if and when they chose to commercialize their stocks. This small bottler came into existence thanks to a chance meeting between wine professional Vincent Laterrade and the Fitte family of Chateau de Herrebouc. Together they embarked on a journey through Gascogne to find the region's hidden jewels. They build relationships with tiny producers and o ...

1988 Cambus 29 Year Old "Sovereign" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $100)

The shuttererd Cambus distillery had a spectacular history in the development of modern whisky and has had an equally important, albeit shorter and more recent, history in K&L's direct import program. At the dawn of the 20th century not everyone was in agreement that grain whisky produced on a Coffey still could actually be considered whisky. The extraordinary quality of Cambus was a key component in establishing that precedent which is a huge part of today's whisky trade. In fact, for many years, Cambus formed a large portion of Johnnie Walker Blue. Unf ...

1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac

93 points James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish. Not very dense. This pales compared with the other top Pauillacs. I never thought this was a perfect win ...

1988 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows plenty of mint, currant and mineral character on the nose. Full-bodied, with big and soft tannins. Plenty of mushroom, berry and fruity character. Opulent and beautiful. (JS, Web Only-2009)" 92 points Vinous: "The 1988 Léoville Barton has a lovely nose of brambly black fruit, melted tar, tobacco leaf and undergrowth, very traditional in style but after three decades, remaining fresher and more vibrant than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and possesses more fruit and greater density than the Langoa-Barton. ...

1988 Guiraud, Sauternes

91 points Wine Spectator: "Medium-gold color, with aromas of lemon tart, curd, piecrust and honey. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with bright acidity and a long, exciting finish. Balanced and refined. (JS, Web-2009)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. The Guiraud 1988 offers the most pleasurable aromatics of the 1980s with a lifted perfumed nose of lanolin, beeswax, brown sugar and quince that all vie for attention. There is a pleasant adhesive scent and fine delineation. The palate is fresh in the mo ...

1988 Rayne-Vigneau, Sauternes (375ml)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As disappointing as the 1989, both in the context of the vintage and the increasing quality of the wines now emerging from Rayne-Vigneau, the 1988 is the best example I have tasted from this property. An intense, honeyed, pear, flower, and apricot fragrance is reminiscent of Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In the mouth, there is exceptional richness, super focus because of fine acidity, a wonderful touch of toasty new oak, and an elegant, very positive, crisp finish. This is a beautifully made, authoritative tasting ...

1988 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Millionaires will have considerable fun comparing the evolution of the 1988 d'Yquem with the 1986. Both are super-rich, honeyed, botrytised wines. The 1988 exhibits a deeper color, as well as a more evolved, richer, and more complex bouquet. Aromas of melted butter, honeyed fruits, spicy nuts, and toasty new oak explode upward from the glass. The 1988 d'Yquem displays more richness and unctuosity than any young d'Yquem I have tasted. It should have 40-60 years of positive evolution, although one suspects that muc ...

1988 Krug "Collection" Brut Champagne

98 points Wine Spectator: "A superb Champagne and still youthful. Honey, ginger, lemon confit, coffee and mineral aromas and flavors come to mind, all kept focused by a firm, tightly wound structure. The finish is where its pedigree shines through, lingering like warm gingerbread and coffee. (BS)" (10/2003) 97 points Vinous: "Tasted from a perfect bottle, the 1988 remains bright and focused, with all of the energy of this great vintage very much on display. Time has naturally softened some of the contours and added a good bit of nuance, but the 1988 Kr ...

1988 Soldera (Case Basse) "Intistieti" Toscana

96 points Vinous: "At nearly thirty years of age, the 1988 Brunello di Montalcino remains bright, vibrant and full of life. Sweet red cherry and plum flavors are pushed forward, with deeper earthy, floral and spice notes that develop in the glass. An intriguing interplay of nuance and energy separates the 1988 from most wines in this range. It remains one of my favorite Soldera wines from the 1980s. This bottle is a bit softer than others have been, but the wine is still complete, super-expressive and inviting. (AG)" (10/2016)

1988 Canon, St-Emilion

90 points Wine Spectator: "Much better than I expected, as the estate was not making the top-quality wines then that it does today. 1988 Auguste Clape Cornas

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 Cornas is a more tender style of Cornas than I am used to from Clape; it is not as concentrated as the 1989. It also comes across as lighter, softer, and not nearly as rich and full as most of this estate's wines tend to be. It is drinking surprisingly well at the moment. While some may applaud both the 1989's and 1988's lack of the forbiddingly raw, hard tannin that the savage wines of Cornas can possess, it is those characteristics that I feel make Cornas so distinctive, and repay those who cellar it for 10 or m ...

1988 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Spectator: "Crisp and lively, with nice herb, currant, spice and vanilla aromas and flavors that extend into a tight but long finish." (11/1992) K&L Notes: "This was another hot year. Fruit matured late, but by waiting for the cherry, blackberry, and cassis flavors to reach their peak, we also saw optimum tannin levels. By 2009 the tannins have faded, but caramel, cherry, cedar and vanilla still appear on the nose." - Winery Note (06/2009)

1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru (97RP, 92BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In 1988 there are 575 cases of Romanee-Conti. Consumers should be deliriously happy, considering there were only 225 cases in 1987. It is more backward than the 1987, 1986, or 1985, and is one of the fullest and most tannic examples of Romanee-Conti I have tasted this decade. It may even outlive the otherworldly 1985. It is staggeringly concentrated with a bouquet that almost defies articulation. There is no doubting what it is and who made it. It is a flashy, dramatic wine with astonishing length and mystique. I would not dare touch a bottle before the mid- to late nineties. The prices for the wines of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti may be exorbitant but the quality of the wines produced in the eighties is truly remarkable. The 1988s are celestial wines selling at stratospheric prices. The 1988 production was twice what it was in 1987, but the same as in 19

Understated, nuanced and wonderfully detailed, especially for a wine of its age. Lemon confit, mint, mineral and sweet floral overtones all grace this exquisitely beautiful, inviting Montrachet. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Margaux, Margaux (95WS, 93JS, 93RP, 92VN). Wine Spectator: "This has both sinew and flesh, with taut dried red currant, blackberry and plum skin notes that are forced to expand outward as the core of black tea, charcoal, plum paste and dark humus fills in quickly behind them. The charcoal-tinged grip carries the finish, with more bass than treble at first, but there's perfume here as well. Seriously long and the most overlooked of the truly great vintages here.
