Gosset Blanc des Blancs Brut Champagne

SKU #1166167 93 points Connoisseurs Guide

Blanc de Blancs are generally regarded as the lighter, more elegant members of the Champagne family, and, if this expressive and involving effort from Gosset hits the mark for refinement, it goes well beyond the norm in terms of sheer richness and depth. It is as complex as Blanc de Blancs is wont to get and sports layer upon layer of brioche, biscuits and cream, but for all of its autolyzed extras it is still spry and vital with life to spare. It is an altogether compelling Champagne best sipped slowly and on its own, but we would not refuse a few oysters if offered. (12/2015)

93 points James Suckling

A very pure and pristine nose that offers a wealth of white flowers, sweet, fresh, yeasty notes and a core of chardonnay fruits that run from lemon to apple and pear notes. The palate's boldly stated; acidity is punchy and bursts up through rich, ripe lemon and nectarine flavor, with gentle toasty nuts wafting through the finish. Long, bold and beautiful. (7/2015)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Brut Grand Blanc de Blancs is a dry, piercing wine endowed with tons of energy and sheer class. Lemon, mint, slate, ash and apricots flow effortlessly from this pointed, beautifully articulated Champagne. This is a dazzling showing from Gosset. This is Lot # L1236121. (AG) (11/2011)

92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

This is really quite elegant with its expressive yet cool nose of pear, green apple, Meyer lemon, white flower and plenty of yeast character. The sense of refinement continues onto the intense and attractively saline-inflected flavors that are supported by a firm but not aggressive mousse, all wrapped in a delicious and inviting finish as each sip invites the next. While this could be enjoyed now I would be inclined to allow it a few more years of cellar time first. (10/2015)

92 points Vinous

Light yellow-gold. Smoky, lees-accented pear and honeydew on the pungent nose, with hints of iodine and anise adding complexity. Juicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors tighten up in the mid-palate, showing very good clarity and thrust. The smoky quality repeats on the smooth, mineral-tinged finish, which clings with excellent focus and tenacity. Lot #L346 1116. (JR) (1/2015)

92 points Wine Spectator

This finely meshed Champagne features vibrant acidity and a satiny texture, with hints of apricot tart, marzipan and pastry cream enlivened by bright lemon curd, chopped nut and tangy fleur de sel accents. (10/2015)

91 points Wine & Spirits

A pale and smoky chardonnay, manifesting the power this variety can achieve in Champagne. The wine feels tight as it smolders through wood smoke toward flavors of heirloom cider apples and saline mineral length. Supple, rich and edgy, this needs cellar time to mellow. (12/2011)

K&L Notes

This is the very newest cuvée to be released from this, the oldest of Champagne houses. It is composed of Chardonnay from 11 villages including Trepail & Viller-Marmery on the east facing slopes of the Mountagne de Reims, Tours-sur-Marne in the Grand Valley of the Marne and the entire Côte des Blancs. It is a blend of three vintages and is aged for four years on the lees before release. Like all of Gosset's wines, this Champagne does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Stopping the malolactic in a Blanc des Blancs Champagne is very, very rare, as Chardonnay is by far the highest acid grape variety in the region. This conservation of acid makes for a very zippy, focused bottle. The genius of Gosset is to give the Trepail and Villers fruit a leading role, as these terroirs show a softer, fruitier side of the grape than the pure chalk laser beams of Mesnil and Oger. That being said, at only seven grams per liter of dosage, and no malo, this is one dry bottle of Champagne!

The dry focus of this Gosset made it a perfect partner for the sushi that I ordered from my friends at Akasaka in Menlo Park. The wine is very light and elegant, but even with rich salmon nigiri has plenty of flavor... It is a classy beverage, and I found it to be understated, subtle, and intriguing. I love Champagne that is hard to describe but easy to drink, and the Gosset Blanc des Blancs is a great example of wine that is easier to enjoy than to describe. The texture and bead are perfection, with plenty of tiny streamers to delight. I loved the subtle apricot aroma and flavor that contrasted the baguette-like toast in this wine, but the best feature was the finish--long, detailed and chalky. If you have a special occasion coming, this is a treat that you will love. It is a great bottle of Champagne.
