2016 d'Arce, Côtes de Castillon (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1304808 91 points Jeb Dunnuck

Showing a beautiful limestone minerality and and focus, the 2016 Château d'Arce offers a terrific perfume of savory red and black fruits, dried herbs, flowers, and loamy soil. With medium to full body, notable tannins, and terrific purity, it has rock solid depth and richness on the palate and is going to benefit from short term cellaring but keep for a decade. The blend is 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and this cuvée comes from the upper limestone plateau in the Castillon region. (2/2019)

91 points James Suckling

Very pretty red already with plums and currants and salty and earthy undertones. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold. (4/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This vineyard is located on the limestone plateau of the Cotes du Castillon. The 2016 Chateau d’Arce is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with vivacious black cherries, warm black plums and mulberries scents plus nuances of cassis, violets and bay leaves and a waft of crushed stones. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, giving black fruit and mineral layers with a firm, grainy backbone and lively lift to the finish. (LPB) 90+ (3/2019)

90 points Vinous

The 2016 d'Arce is a soft, floral Côtes de Castillon from Hélène Garcin and Patrice Lévêque. Soft, floral and fruity, with lovely red/purplish berry fruit, the 2016 will drink well upon release and for at least a handful of years thereafter. (AG) (1/2019)

90 points Wine Spectator

Fresh and pure, offering a tightly focused beam of raspberry coulis and cassis notes, with light anise and floral accents along the edges. A pretty mineral twinge adds cut on the finish. Not big, but very pure and nicely rendered. Drink now through 2027. (JM) (3/2019)

K&L Notes

90 points Neal Martin in Vinous: "The 2016 d’Arce, from the same owners as Barde-Haut and Clos l’Eglise, has a dense black cherry and iodine-scented bouquet, powerful but retaining good definition. The palate is grainy on the entry, displaying good density and fine acidity, and a little backward toward the finish, which offers good grip. Slightly rustic, but I mean that in a good way. Recommended, and a great value." (1/2019)

Another perfect score for value in 2016 and you will see almost no 2017 as 90% of the crop was lost in the April 27th freeze. Helene Garcin Leveque's new project is a smashing success-three vintages in a row. 90% Merlot and 10% CF. All my notes say is "so sweet and sexy-lovely texture on the palate. Enjoy young and often." Enough said--this is even better than their 2014 and 2015.

Côtes de Castillon continues to be a source for some of the best values on the Right Bank. Many top producers in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol have invested in properties within this neighboring appellation, making wines which are nearly equal in quality to their best labels at a fraction of the price. Hélène Garcin, owner of Chateau Clos l'Église in Pomerol and Chateau Barde-Haut and the new Poesia in St-Emilion, now owns Chateau d’Arce in Côtes de Castillon. 2016 is only her third vintage, but certainly the best vintage yet. The quality is already apparent here. Loads of bright, sweet fruit. Very fresh with fine tannins. Terrific balance. Exceptional value.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
