2013 Benanti "Serra della Contessa" Etna Rosso

SKU #1353042 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2013 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa is a unique wine from a unique vineyard site located 500 meters above sea level on the southern Viagrande flank of the volcano. It does not fit squarely into the Etna Rosso mold. It flaunts those differences with pride. This wine is based on Nerello Mascalese, with a smaller part Nerello Cappuccio. There is a pronounced balsam element with some spice and dark herb that add an almost savory or meaty quality that you don't get from wines made on the north side of the volcano. (ML) (8/2017)

92 points Wine & Spirits

Ungrafted 100-year-old vines on Etna’s southeastern slope produce the fruit for this powerful wine. It feels darker and more robust than Benanti’s Rovittello bottling (also recommended here), with violet scents and firm mineral tannins that grip the dense core of plum fruit. Notes of wild fennel and orange peel come up with air, as does a cool, balancing salinity. (6/2018)

91 points Vinous

Bright red. Clean crisp sweet red cherry, strawberry aromas and flavors with minerals and pungent floral hints. Finishes long and bright, with juicy acidity and lavender notes. A blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grown at about 500 meters asl on the south-east slope of Etna. (ID) (9/2017)

Jancis Robinson

A little more concentrated and sweeter on the nose than Rovittello, yet much more compact and backwards. Clear Nerello stylistic and a little less lifted in its acidity. Big but ripe tannins and lots of fine concentrated fruit on the finish. 17/20 points. (WS) (8/2014)

- Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world. From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England. Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. The entire Italian peninsula is seeing a winemaking revolution and is now one of the most exciting wine Region in the world.
