2016 Domaine Pierre Usseglio Lirac Rouge

SKU #1387762 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2016 Lirac checks in as 70% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah, and other permitted varieties, with the Mourvèdre and Syrah brought up mostly in demi-muids. Blackberries, garrigue, peppery herbs, licorice, and earth characteristics give way to a full-bodied, pure, elegant, beautifully textured 2016 that has remarkable purity and length. It’s one of the finest Liracs out there. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Bright flowers and sappy, purple-berry aromas. Some cassis, too. There’s a smooth, elegant and fresh core to the palate. Bright and lively. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Dark, plummy and rich, Usseglio's full-bodied 2016 Lirac has turned out as well as I hoped when I tasted it last year. It's creamy and lush, yet it shows no heat or dried fruit, just plush, hedonistic pleasure. It's a blend of 70% Grenache and 10% each Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah, aged 12 months in concrete vats (50%) and oak demi-muids (50%). (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Baked black fruit, raisins, clove, milk chocolate – an attractive array of flavours here, even if they do finish quicker than expected. Fine chalky tannin. Displays good potential to improve with age. (RH) 16.5/20 Inner quote mark (10/2017)

"At first taste, it promised and withheld itself; it lay trembling upon the tongue, begging the reassurance of a kindly palate; this granted, it gently opened, responding to the new, internal intimacy..."- John LeCarre. A stolen quote from a far more word-gifted gentleman about a different wine, but the sentiments are true, as this excellent domaine produces, in addition to their much sought after Chateauneuf-du-Pape bottlings, one of the greatest wines from Lirac, a scant stone's throw across the Rhone River. What I found memorable about this Lirac, apart from the laughably low price, was the sheer dimension of winemaking, the unbridled, plush aromas, resplendent fruit and fresh acidity that burst forth like a sleek thoroughbred upon the palate, ran the course and finished smooth and elegant. Right out of the gate I knew this was a winner!

How good of a vintage was it for Pierre Usseglio in 2016? They accomplished an incredibly rare feat of crafting two 100-point wines for starters. But one of the best kept secrets is that their whole range is stunning, even down to this brilliant value that far outpaces its modest appellation. Pure kirsch and garrigue line delicate but abundant aromas that lead to a wine with terrific purity and finesse, rebounding with bright acidity and red/black fruits that line the palate. There is a nice floral note to round it all out, and a finish that carries long after the last sip. Those who seek out this gem will have a rewarding wine to follow over the next decade, but it will be hard to resist pulling corks on it even now.

What a fantastic Lirac! This wine starts out with a drop-dead gorgeous array of Baker's chocolate, marzipan, dark berry and spice aromas. The palate is loaded with macerated dark berries, spice, silky tannins and mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long and smooth and lasts a good 30+ seconds after swallowing. This is a showstopper and easily merits a 6 bottle purchase if not a case.
Top Value! Drink from 2018 to 2025

Now, this is my kind of Lirac! Luscious, ripe, fruit-driven, but not without accents of slate and stone, this 2016 is a cheerful red from start to finish. Boysenberry, wild cherry, and raspberry coulis flavors dominate at the outset and are later accented by touches of baking spice, floral tones, and the aforementioned slate. For all its concentration, it is surprisingly lithe and lively. You could lay it down and drink it five to ten years down the line, but it's so delicious now, doing so would be an incredible feat of self-control. My recommendation: buy a case and drink it now with abandon!
