2016 Raul Perez La Vizcaína "Las Gundiñas" Bierzo (Previously $35)

SKU #1402438 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas comes from a plot with deeper soils, and the wine feels quite immediate and fruit driven. There is a bitter touch in the palate. I've seen some ups and downs with this wine, and Raúl Pérez confirmed that the wines are variable, but they tend to deliver in the medium term. It's not particularly complex, but it drinks well. 91 points Decanter

From a rare, flat, southeast-facing vineyard site with deep soils, on the edge of the Camino de Santiago. ‘It’s very consistent, and can be fresh in hot years without producing raisined fruits,’ says Perez. The Mencia field blend is 100% whole-bunch fermented with a 90-day maceration, followed by a year in used oak. The palate is brisk, with ripe blackcurrant and a lively acidity, counterpointed by a saline note and a firm rasp of tannin. Overall it's dense and dark-hearted, more rustic in style. Jancis Robinson

Quite broad, sweet and fragrant. Rather burgundian in shape and even flavour initially and then with lots of fine tannin. 16.5/20 points. (JR) (2/2019)

K&L Notes

Luis Gutierrez writes: "Raúl Pérez produces a couple of reds from the Gredos Mountains in a joint venture with La Tintorería wine shop from Madrid...These wines now play in the premier league of Gredos."

This exciting and organic blend is bases primarily on the Mencia grape along with a host of other indigenous types. Aromas and flavors of both red and dark berries along with hints of licorice and iron are immediately present when poured. There is a meaty quality to this ripe and robust wine which ends with a fine tannic grip.

The wines coming out of Bierzo are an exciting and refreshing take on Spanish wine, and this shows why perfectly. It has a beautifully expressive nose of violets, fresh plums and wild red berries with a touch of savoriness, smooth, integrated tannins and acidity that gives overall freshness and pizzaz. Great for a refreshing red on a hot day, and sure to pair well with any Mediterranean fare.

There's something incredibly compelling about Mencia. There's a dark, earthy spiciness to this wine. But what is most compelling comes out after the wine opens up in the glass, even after just a few minutes. The profile shows graham cracker, cinnamon pastry, with subtle dark fruit fruit, and a wet gravelly earthiness reminiscent of desert rain. This is all supported by a surprisingly dense structure, chalky tannins and fresh acidity. With somewhere between a light to medium body, this wine is perfect for salty, crispy tapas--jamon Iberico, olives, cured or crispy snacks and Spanish cheeses.
