2005 Bruichladdich Peated (Port Charlotte) 12 Year Old "Alexander Murray" Cask Strength Small Batch Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1404293

The exciting new whiskies coming from Alexander Murray are proof that if you work hard enough, great single malt whisky deals are still out there. We can't buy cask strength Bruichladdich for any price on the open market right now and if you do find something it will almost definitely from the old regime and wildly expensive. When we see casks pop up from the period after the reopening in 2001, they're almost always privately owned by people who were smart enough to grab a cask when they were sale for £700 a pop. Those are basically unavailable to normal people, but it seems that someone, perhaps an early investor in the rebuilt distillery, was able to secure a significant quantity of whisky to sell this small batch. Alexander Murray is famous for supplying well known chains with good quality bargain malt for very low prices, but their buying power has allowed them to secure more and more interesting stocks at completely reasonable prices. They've been diverting much of the high-quality malt to their cask strength program, which is bottled without chill filtration or coloring of any kind. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels for 12 years and brimming with wild peaty maltiness. While Alexander Murray don't yet have the cache that some other high-quality bottlers have garnered, rare cask strength whisky from excellent distilleries that we wouldn't otherwise have access at ridiculously reasonable prices is exactly how you get there. That combo is always a yes in our book.

I find myself giddy with anticipation whenever I catch word of a new Port Charlotte bottling. Though this Alexander Murray cask was not what I originally expected, I was very pleasantly surprised. The strong whiff of peat on the nose dissipates, revealing a treasure trove of unique flavors. Fresh herbs, candied citrus and golden raisin form exquisite layers of flavor, married by a pleasant sea salt vein. With the peat in the back seat, we are free to appreciate apricot-glazed and cured meat with a peppery finish. The whole harmonious experience left me thirsting for more. Pick up a bottle before they disappear; you won't regret it.

Even though Bruichladdich is not normally peated, they may want to consider doing a peated batch under their own label more often given how incredibly smooth and elegant this offering came out. Toasted malt, hazelnut, and sweet caramel show most prominently here, with just a touch of smoke that seems to intertwine itself seamlessly with the other characters, rather than overwhelm them. The very subtle peat note builds up the other flavors to give incredible depth and intricacy. This is truly a unique bottle.

This selection of Bruichladdich is lively and tasty. In the nose there are hints of beeswax and complex sweet aromas. In the mouth it is soft and creamy, rich and round. A splash of water opens it up and it becomes a little more creamy. It drinks well with or without water. I did not get any smoke aromas or flavors in this single malt.

This wild little batch of Bruichladdich is one of the few independently bottled from the little distillery on the west coast of Islay that we've ever seen. The supposedly peaty batch isn't so peaty after all. After 12 years in refill hoggies, it's showing lots more smoke, sweet malt, and earthy complexity on the nose than obvious peat. But on the palate, the deep, linear, salty smoke. It's not as in-your-face as the modern Port Charlottes, but neither is it as tame as the standard Bruichladdich. Maybe that's why this batch made it out, or it belonged to one of the original investors, but I've yet to have anything from the new era this old or delicious. An absolutely screaming deal considering the quality and rarity of this offering, and thanks to Alexander Murray's extremely reasonable price points and our great relationship.
