2015 Remi Niero "Eminance" Côte-Rôtie (Elsewhere $90)

SKU #1405701 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2015 Côte Rôtie Eminence from Niero is another brilliant 2015 that should be snatched up by readers. A blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier sourced from the Valliere and Coteau de Bassenon lieux-dits, aged in 20% new oak, it has a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, dried flowers, incense, and cured meats. Medium to full-bodied and seamless on the palate, it has an elegant, pure, yet concentrated style that’s going to continue evolving gracefully for 15 years or more. (3/2019)

Lavender and violet perfume extends from nose to finish in this aromatic Syrah. Black-plum and cherry flavors are juicy yet spry, balanced by crisp acidity and tangs of crushed granite. Ripe, fine tannins accentuate its supple style. Lovely already it should gain complexity well through 2030 and hold further. *Editors' Choice* (AI) (3/2019)

Brilliant ruby. Suave, mineral-accented dark berry, violet and incense scents show very good definition and pick up a smoky nuance as the wine opens up. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors and a touch of olive. Clings with strong tenacity on the finish, which is shaped by smooth, slow-building tannins. (raised in demi-muids and barriques, 20 percent of them new) (JR) (4/2017)

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Some perfume. Big and round and unusually concentrated for a Côte Rôtie. But it’s a fine wine with, just, the sap and savour of Côte Rôtie in evidence on the palate. Long and well balanced. Very clean finish. 17/20 points. (JR) (10/2017)

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
