2018 Carillon de Angélus, St Emilion (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1412110 94-95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is a really together second wine of Angélus with a tight and focused center palate of blackberries and hints of chocolate and hazelnuts. Firm and very fine tannins and a long and persistent finish. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Le Carillon d'Angélus comes bounding out of the glass with bold notes of crushed blackberries, black raspberries and wild blueberries plus hints of spice box, damp soil, smoked meats and fallen leaves plus a waft of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black and blue fruits with firm, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy. (LPB) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

91-94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Le Carillon d'Angélus is laced with striking floral/savory aromatics and brisk saline notes that complement a core of bright red-toned fruit. Pliant and supple, with notable purity and class, the 2018 is gorgeous today and benefits from an extra touch of Franc that did not go into the Grand Vin. Carillon is a blend of fruit from three sources: 7 hectares around the château, 5 hectares closer to Cheval Blanc and 3 hectares in the Saint Christophe des Bardes sector. It is especially fine in 2018 and could very well turn out to be an overachiever. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark The second wine is the 2018 Le Carillon d’Angélus. It’s a more serious, elegant wine that’s 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, from vines near the estate as well as from near Cheval Blanc and Figeac (these grapes first went into this cuvée starting in 2013) as well as from near Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. It has a fresh, focused style as well as classic notes of crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet also keep for 10-15 years. Inner quote mark (5/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Will have 16 months in oak, 50% new. Barrel sample. Deepest crimson. Dark, ripe and finely perfumed cassis and just a touch of oak sweetness on the nose. Lively fruit supported by light, chalky tannins. Definitely slimmer on the palate than many wines in this vintage but thus with greater elegance and refreshment. Chewy tannins but not in the least tough. Needs time but I like the restraint here. Drink 2024-2030. (JH) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

90-92 points Neal Martin in Vinous: "The 2018 Carillon d’Angélus includes additional grapes from 8 hectares of recent acquisitions (3 hectares in Tour St. Christophe and 5 hectares between Cheval Blanc and Figeac). It is far better than the 2017. Black cherries, raspberry coulis and subtle orange pith aromas with well integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of lightly spiced red fruit with a fine saline finish. This is a very commendable Deuxième Vin." (11/2019)

Hints of violets and licorice in the nose and mouth. Quite floral and pretty upfront with a fair amount of tannin and structure in the back. Should come together in time very nicely! 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc
