2016 La Monacesca "Mirum" Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva

SKU #1419165 93 points James Suckling

A complex, quite flinty verdicchio with a ton of citrus fruit and pears and a rather succulent but not heavy palate. In fact, the finish has a nice lightness of touch and some real finesse. Drink now. (8/2018)

K&L Notes

The Matelica region of the Marche is one of the most unique growing zones in all of Italy; it is a north-south valley in the middle of the Apennine mountain range that once was a salt lake. The orientation of the valley closes it off from the warm coastal waters (the opposite of the west coast of the US) and gives it a more continental climate of cold winters, hot summers but cool nights, the perfect balance to make vibrant wines. According to the winery, the "Mirum" riserva is only produced in exceptional vintages. Winery tasting notes: "Combined with a lengthy maturation, these grapes yield a remarkably aromatic nose, which releases intense scents of toasted almonds, citrus, honey, and crusted bread; with cellaring, the bouquet will develop still greater complexity. On the palate, it immediately expands to astounding richness and suppleness, balanced, rich, and seemingly endless."

I've long found this to be one of the most special and unique of Italian white wines as proprietor Aldo Cifola allows the grapes an additional two weeks of hang time on the vines prior to harvesting. The result is a wine with complex aromas and flavors that retains its natural acidity and gains complexity in the bottle with age. It ferments and rests entirely in stainless steel and delivers wonderful richness especially when paired with aged cheeses, pastas, white meats and antipasti.

I really like this wine. It is ripe and savory, full-bodied, concentrated, with focus and freshness. With dark yellow fruit tones, hints of nuts, herbs, and minerals. This wine pulls in many different directions, yet never pulls itself apart. It a very very good white wine. I would happily put this up against much more expensive white Burgundy's. Serious, delicious wine.

Every year since Greg introduced me to this wine I continue to be amazed by its seemingly unrivaled ability to combine such richness and ripeness of flavor with such bright, electric acidity and verve. Upfront notes of golden fruit and honeyed apricot meet preserved lemon and zesty citrus peel. Stony mineral components add intrigue. Round and creamy on the entry but focused on linear on the finish...I keep getting an almost Chenin Blanc-like character, too. Delicious wine year after year.

For years we’ve been selling the wines of Monacesca as an alternative to Chardonnay. It’s a full bodied, broad shouldered white that checks many of the same boxes that customers are looking for. And if you’re into that---great. But honestly, having worked my way through four vintages of Monacesca at this point, I really think its so much more. It really deserves its place as one of the absolute best verdicchios in the store. Rich and creamy, with a viscous center, candied lemon and pineapple notes along with poached pears. It continues to amaze me how dense and rich this wine can be, but still has an acidity that brings levity and lightness. An absolutely wonderful wine.

Matelica is my favorite DOC for Verdicchio, the inland Apennine valley full of marine sediments that has a true continental climate and always gives wines with verve, bright burst and...richness. The nose of 2016 Monacesca Riserva Mirum is full of spice and ripe stone fruit, layered and flowing. On the palate the richness of the vintage is obvious, but the balance of this wine is what is so evident, focused brightness encased in a supple, texture filled body. What makes this wine so unique is that it isn’t harvested until the third week of October this allows the grapes to achieve total physiological ripeness of flavor without losing balance. That leads to the deeper aromatics, that show more complete flavors, less green and more complex fruit on the palate. A very long and vibrant finish continues and on. The amazing thing is that even with the ripeness this wine has great acidity and real aging ability. Superb drinking now, I love this wine with Halibut or Sea Bass.
