2015 Einaudi "Ludo" Barolo

SKU #1423549 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2015 Barolo Ludo is the most accessible offering in the Poderi Luigi Einaudi portfolio, and this is absolutely intentional. Fruit is sourced from all the estate's major vineyard sites (the youngest vines), including Cannubi, Terlo and Bussia. The so-called Terrazza parcel that they farm in Cannubi was put into this wine instead of the single-vineyard expression. Ludo has a shorter maceration than the other wines (at 18 to 20 days). This vintage is healthy, dark and exuberant with a full and generous set of aromas that span from dark fruit to cola and balsam herb. Mint and eucalyptus also appear. By the way, this wine comes with some really cool cardboard packaging. The bottle is hidden in what looks like children's building blocks. (ML) 92+ Inner quote mark (6/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Wild red berry, fragrant blue flower and tobacco aromas align with a delicate whiff of camphor. The full-bodied, refined palate doles out juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice, while taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide elegant structure and balance. Drink 2022–2027. (KO) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

91 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark With its rich, meaty tannins and dark, smoky fruit flavors, this feels ripe and warm, the notes of licorice, cocoa and warm spice adding appeal. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2015 Barolo Ludo is a gorgeous entry-level bottling from Einaudi. Fruity, supple and engaging, the Ludo is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Succulent red cherry, plum and sweet spice notes are all pushed forward. The Ludo is built on a core of fruit from Terlo, with smaller pieces from Cannubi, Bussia and Zuncai. Shorter fermentations exalt the fruit. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

This Barolo continues to improve in depth and complexity as the fruit comes from the younger vines within Einaudi's vineyard holdings in the zones of Barolo, Monforte and Verduno. It's full-bodied and wonderful to drink now yet has the structure to age nicely for many years. It's also a great introduction to Barolo for anyone looking to try one for the first time as well as an excellent value for the experienced.

Rich, expressive characters of candied cherries, spice and ripe dark fruits, tar, and dried herbs. It is not considered too young to consume. There are aromas of warm spices, such as nutmeg and clove, in the body, followed by beautiful, gripping, yet gentle enough tannins.
