2017 Guy Farge "Passion de Terrasse" Saint-Joseph

SKU #1424129 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark From vines planted in 1904 that yielded just 20-25 hectoliters per hectare, the 2017 Saint Joseph Passion de Terrasses boasts a stunning, complex bouquet of roses and ripe stems (it was vinified using only whole clusters), black olives and black cherries. It's medium to full-bodied, concentrated yet silky, with awesome texture and length on the mouthwatering finish. Truly a tour de force, this beauty should drink well through 2035. Outer quote mark Passion de Terrasses is sourced from vines over a century old, grown on steep granite slopes. The fruit is 100% whole bunch, fermented with indigenous yeasts then matured for 12 months in five-year-old 400l oak barrels. The wine is very full, with ripe fruit, fresh juice and powerful, fine, massy tannins coating the palate. This is hugely powerful, but not from the oak, alcohol or overripeness. It's very long, with a huge tannic heft that will take time to settle. It narrowly avoids overextraction and makes a huge impression. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Saint Joseph Passion De Terrasses is a step up in price and has a touch more ripeness as well as notes of passion fruits, spring flowers, game, and obvious minerality. With medium body, bright yet integrated acidity, and fine tannins, it's an outstanding Saint Joseph... 91+ Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Outer quote mark Inky ruby. Powerful, smoke- and spice-tinged dark berry, licorice and cola scents take on a suave floral note with air. Smooth and appealingly sweet, offering intense blackberry liqueur and violet pastille flavors and a hint of allspice. Finishes supple and long, with subtle tannins framing a repeating floral note. K&L Notes

Guy Farge took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally he sold his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked) and then to Delas. In 2007, he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy's winemaking prowess. He's now working with his son Thomas, and each bottling represents some of the best we have seen from his primarily granitic terroirs. The "Passion de Terrasse" is his oldest vines from sites in Aubert, La Roue and around the winery in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols It is 100% Syrah fermented whole-cluster and aged in 400L barrels for about 12 months with a small portion of new wood. The results, as with all of Guy's wines, are pure, balanced expressions of his terroir.
