2016 de Chantegrive Rouge, Graves

SKU #1428544 92 points Wine Enthusiast

One of the leading estates in the Graves has produced an elegant, balanced wine. Wood aging has added to the fruit tannins to give plenty of structure to go with the black-currant fruits. This is a wine to age, drink from 2023. (RV) (6/2019)

Some chocolate and leafy, cabernet character on the nose, but the fruit seems ripe enough on the generous palate. Slightly chewy finish. Just a year longer in the bottle ought to help. A blend of 50 per cent Merlot and 50 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. (2/2019)

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Château de Chantegrive was solid, with a pretty bouquet of Christmas spice, mint, and red and black currant fruits. It’s medium-bodied, has fine tannins, and good acidity as well as balance. (2/2018)

Vinous

The 2016 de Chantegrive shows the darker, more virile side of Graves. Dark cherry, chocolate, espresso and torrefaction notes dominate over a more typical expression of the year. The heavily extracted, potent style comes very close to overpowering the wine. There is not shortage of density or power. It would be nice to see if a little more subtlety is possible. De Chantegrive has been making consistently quality wines in every vintage and the 2016 is no different. Chocolate, and currants, touch of fresh roasted coffee and olives, with a distinctly Cabernet Sauvignon character. A great wine for the cellars.

Here is a softer, gentler style of Graves with a milky sweetness adding complexity to the earthy blackberry and dark currant fruit. There is a fresh streak of mineral in the rich Merlot dominated finish. This is easy to drink and delicious now.
