2001 Ben Nevis 18 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1429989

The excellent Ben Nevis Distillery is quickly becoming one of our absolute favorite malts. The wonderful old distillery at the base of Scotland's tallest mountain was built in the town of Fort Williams back in 1825. Founded by "Long" John Macdonald, the namesake of the famous old blend, Ben Nevis was one of the first single malt distilleries to install a coffey still on site, producing both grain and malt whiskies for blends. In 1989, the distillery was acquired by Nikka and became focused almost entirely on the Japanese market. US releases are extremely rare and we currently cannot get the distillery bottlings stateside. Thankfully, there seems to be a significant amount of old Nevis kicking around our supplier's warehouses in Scotland, the result of its good blending quality. This is the beauty of the Scottish system—malts that were once only valued as components are now available as exceptional single casks because they just don't fit in those simple blends anymore. There's group of diehards who love the idiosyncratic style coming out of Fort Williams. The malt itself is somewhat of a dichotomy, both rich and powerful, yet forgiving and subtle. Some funky aromatics paired with vibrant fruit and cereal components. The whole thing is held together with a deep underpinning of fudgy mocha and toasted vanilla. An excellent example of how Ben Nevis doesn't need a sherry cask to be absolutely great and one of the purest examples of this excellent distillery we've bottled to date.

The wonderful Ben Nevis Distillery has become a staple in Whisky Season. Not only does it seem to be available, but almost every cask we taste has something to love. Last year it we bought two, a young bourbon barrel from Signatory and a fabulous sherry butt from Old Malt Cask. Now we've come back with this insanely delicious expression that falls right between those two in age and style. The wonderful Nevis malt tends to have this gorgeous fruity funkiness that can be somewhat divisive, but in this case I think it's restrained enough to appeal to even the most sensitive noses. Give it a little air in the glass before you get in there. The nose shows some wonderful petrol quality (is it Pfalz?), behind that bouquet of dried herbs, sultanas, salted nuts, lemon peel and earthy malt. The palate is spice and sweet at the same time, with a lemon custard, black pepper, crunchy stoniness and a bright lifted finish. Like ALL our cask strength offerings, the splash of water should be ubiquitous now. It almost never ruins things and, in this case, takes this malt to a whole new level, but instead of shifting the flavor profile it just heightens and rounds the edges perfectly - maybe it's a bit less petrol and much more lemon. The palate is just shimmering now. Still plenty of zesty zip, chalky mineral and pepper which I love, but now with a honeyed quality that was missing at full strength. A real Nevis-y one here that leaves you smell the empty glass longingly.

Mid palate galore. This is all about the nougaty center. It's sweet barley, soft Christmas spices, and vanilla laden, but with a stiff upper lip. While many whiskies finish in the back of your mouth, this one sticks right in the middle of the tongue, slowly oozing its fudge and caramel goodness everywhere. There is a bit of a dark chocolate and flamed orange peel note, but it's hard to place distinctly in the nose, body, or finish. It sort of informs all three phases of enjoyment. 18 years old and at that sweet $100 mark, this is classic old school luxury from Ben Nevis.

I was a bit surprised to get such an earthy note on the nose from this Scotch, like fresh tilled earth with pencil shavings. Then, the fruit comes in with a big blast of poached pear paired with dried ginger and cinnamon. The palate offered up notes of almond roca, candied ginger, and sweet tobacco leaf. The finish was lean, tingly, and expressed some oak spices and apple peels at the very end.

What a fantastic treat. This single malt is bursting full of life and pleasure. Without water it is pure and clean with honey tones. With a touch of water it comes to life. The nose is malty and floral. In the mouth it is complex, with sweet malt and honey flavors, and a beautiful energy. Delicious and juicy, and there are no smoke flavors.
