2015 Domaine de Marcoux "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape 6-Pack (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1432423 96-98 points Vinous

(fermented in concrete vats and then aged in concrete and neutral oak barrels) Lurid ruby. A heady, expressive bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, cherry compote, potpourri, licorice and Asian spices, while a bright mineral flourish builds in the glass. Sweet, palate-staining red fruit liqueur, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors show outstanding depth as well as vivacity thanks to a core of juicy acidity. Plays power off finesse with a deft hand and finishes incredibly long, sappy and pure; velvety tannins emerge very slowly. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this monumental wine turn out to be the star of the 2015 vintage in the Rhône Valley, south as well as north. (3/2017)

Offering more violets, blueberries, black raspberries, crushed flowers and licorice, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and has a seamless, elegant, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. Reminding me of the 2006 with its sweet tannin, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will keep nicely over the following two decades. There’s few wines I’d rather have in the cellar and this 2015 looks to be another blockbuster. Without a doubt one of my favorite estates, as well as a reference point for Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine de Marcoux is located in the northern part of the appellation and is run with incredible talent, passion and insight by Sophie and Catherine Armenier. They produce a single white wine and up to three red cuvées: the base Châteauneuf du Pape, their old vines Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes cuvée and a terrific Côtes du Rhône. (10/2016)

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
