2015 Matias "Soberanes Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40)

SKU #1437741 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Lemon balm, pink grapefruit pith and a touch of sour cream show on the nose of this bottling, which quickly freshens up into more citrus elements as it sits open. There is strong tightness to the palate, where fresh lemon, nectarine and warmer pineapple tones are dusted with acidity and sea salt. (MK) (12/2018)

With cool morning fog and sea breezes from Monterey Bay followed by warm afternoons, the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a match made in heaven for growing Chardonnay. The Matias Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay capitalizes on these conditions to produce a truly stunning, well-balanced wine. Lemon verbena and tropical tarte tatin round out the nose followed by a creamy, acid-driven, saline finish on the palate. This Chardonnay outclasses similar wines at loftier price points easily.

Managed by two long-time wine families, the Pisoni and Franscioni's, the Soberanes Vineyard is proving itself a great place to get quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir out of Santa Lucia. This Chardonnay is slightly nutty and rich with notes of apricot and peach, but a bright flash of acidity on the back-end keeps it lively and interesting. Well-balanced and well-made, this is a fantastic deal and worth adding to your weekly rotation.

I continue to be super impressed with the wines from Matias. This Soberanes Vineyard Chardonnay is simply delicious. It combines the richness and purity of fruit you'd expect from this top site, with a fresh, zesty quality that gives beautiful drive and mouthwatering acidity. Pure fruit expressing golden orchard fruit, apple strudel, ripe peach, honeyed apricot and almond butter. These beautifully ripe, rich flavors and balanced by a fresh, lemon curd like tangy acidity and a wet stone mineral tinge. A very complete wine with lovely poise and complex layers. Drinking beautifully. Incredible price.
