2017 Chappellet "Signature" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1440614 93 points Vinous

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature is plump, racy and super-expressive. Raspberry jam, spice, mocha, blood orange and pomegranate are all given an extra kick of textural richness. Unctuous and bold, the 2017 offers tons of near- and medium-term appeal. This is a terrific effort. The Signature Cabernet remains one of the very best Napa Valley wines in its price range. The larger production cuvée is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature, which checks in as 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 % Petit Verdot, and the balance Malbec. This cuvée is normally relatively easy to find in the market and it's always a good value. The 2017 doesn't break that trend, offering up loads of black and blue fruits intermixed with lots of mountain scrub brush, crushed rocks, cedary herbs, and earth. It's medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, has considerable elegance, and a great finish. (1/2020)

A firm, silky red with blueberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Medium body. Fine tannins. Delicious. Quite refined style here. (2/2020)

K&L Notes

For the past three decades, the 'Signature' Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship of Chappellet. The fruit hails from the famed Pritchard Hill, on vines growing upon the rocky hillside and produce small, intensely concentrated grapes. The crop is thinned in efforts to promote full, even ripening. The wine is a blend of predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as bits of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Aromatically the wine jumps from the glass with notes of ripe black cherries, cassis, fine dark chocolate, as well as oak-influenced espresso, cinnamon, and clove. On the palate, the wine is full of ripe dark berries, and black currants, with spicey lingering flavors of nutmeg, anise, and smoked cedar. Robert Parker writes: "This is one of the blue bloods of Napa Valley with an impressive résumé. (One of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignons I have ever tasted from the valley was the 1969 Chappellet made by Philip Togni)."

Whoa, Nelly! This is a dense, fruit-packed monster. Layer after layer of black cherry and cassis notes are ushered in by ample tannins. If you're a fan of big California Cabs, look no further.
