2017 Domaine des Rémizières "Cuvée Christophe" Crozes-Hermitage

SKU #1441550 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

The only 2017 presented, the 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe comes from older vines (65- to 70-year-old vines) and was brought up in 70% new French oak. Its saturated purple color is followed by a ripe, powerful bouquet of blackberries, blackcurrants, ground pepper, saddle leather, and leafy herbs. With subtle background oak, full body, ripe tannins, and terrific balance, it's a big rich, stacked Crozes Hermitage that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade or more. 93+ (12/2018)

92 points James Suckling

This has rich, dark-plum and chocolate aromas and flavors with a savory thread of licorice, graphite, espresso and toasted oak spice. The tannins are very plush and attractively fleshy. Really glossy plums to close. Drink or hold. (NS) (10/2019)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Coming from 65- to 70-year-old vines planted on the white clays around Larnage and aged entirely in barrel (70% new), the 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvee Christophe offers up seductive notes of cinnamon and vanilla. Yet there's enough rich, dark fruit under this veneer of oak to support it. Full-bodied, plush and velvety, there's no denying the modernity of this wine, but it's very well made, finishing on lingering notes of licorice and baking spices. (JC) 92+ (1/2020)

K&L Notes

This straight Syrah hails from the relatively cool climate of Crozes-Hermitage, but is full bodied and inky in profile. Deep and weighty on the palate, it has incredible, earthy depth and classic smoky pepper notes to round out its deep cassis fruit. Although this varietal can sometimes present a rather tannic front, Domaine des Remizières does an excellent job here, integrating and managing the tannin perfectly. They use a touch of French oak to finish out the wine and add balance to the intensity of the Syrah.

It's rewarding to encounter vines that are older than I am, for they often bequeath the wines with a certain enduring character and authority of place that can only be realized over time. The Demeures family has been traditionally farming these septuagenarian Syrah vines for three generations, and this sense of stewardship informs the sound decisions made in both the vineyard and cellar. Named for the eldest son, the Cuvee Christophe was aged in new oak for 15 months, and reveals fresh blackcurrant, pepper and black olive notes with mineral undertones, layered over a smooth, licorice-tinged finish. An excellent pairing with seasoned lamb or a truffle-flavored risotto.

This is a fairly rich Syrah with aromas of cooked meat, espresso, and a touch of dark chocolate. Each sip brings to mind a steak dinner followed by an affogato. It could use a little aging time, but it will develop very nicely over the next 3-6 yrs. On the tongue you’ll find a rich but subtle profile of dark fruit (blueberries or plum), with a lingering taste of cooking spices, cool herbs, and wet earth. There is a prevalent French oak, which helps to soften out the intensity and will smooth out over time. This will be a great Rhone addition to your cellar and is a worthy purchase.

The wines of Crozes-Hermitage have improved so dramatically over the past 20 years that this is now your go-to source for world class Syrah; and best of all, at a user friendly price. Thanks to the efforts of producers like Domaine des Remizieres, this appellation has undergone a radical upgrade in quality now producing some of the finest Syrah sporting all that classic northern Rhone character. While this may not quite be Hermitage or Cote-Rotie, you can pick up a case of this wine for what you might pay for one bottle of its better addressed neighbor.

Bright and lively nose rife with dried blackberries and a hint of brushy sage complements and intermingles with tobacco. Juicy black and red fruits on the palate with rich tannins and a healthy acidity makes this an excellent candidate for richer meals and cheeses. A really delicious pure Syrah from the Northern Rhone.

The wines from the Desmeures family have become some of my favorite in our Northern Rhone portfolio. They are rich and saturated with loads of Syrah flavor but they still reflect their region and land with balance and grace. The 2017 Cuvee Christophe is reminiscent of the 2015 which was so deep and so rich. That had the backbone of the 2015 vintage and really wanted to rest for a few more years before it really shows all it has to give. The 2017 offers more immediacy in its approachability. Deep red and black fruited notes riding high on black cherry followed by a panoply of African spices and smoked bacon. I recently tasted this wine over the course of a couple of days and it opened and developed even more. Even with this accessibility it still has loads of concentration for aging. Another triumph from this emerging estate!

A very classic Northern Rhône Syrah with its characteristic violets, vanila and meat aromatics, along with blood orange and white pepper. Very good wine to pair with all kinds of stews and Indian food as well.
