2017 Ferraton Père et Fils "La Matinière" Crozes-Hermitage

SKU #1442954 91-92 points Vinous

Bright violet color. Lucid dark berry and floral aromas are complemented by spice and mineral notes that build with air. Clean and energetic in style, offering juicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors, a hint of olive and a late hint of spicy cracked pepper. Finishes gently sweet, tannic and quite long, leaving a note of violet pastille behind. (85% concrete and 15% neutral oak) (JR) (7/2019)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Atypically firm and structured for this cuvée, the medium to full-bodied 2017 Crozes Hermitage La Matinière boasts terrific aromas of violets, crushed stone, blueberries and licorice. It looks like a solid repeat of the 2015. (JC) (12/2018)

90 points Jeb Dunnuck

The entry-level wine from Crozes is the 2017 Crozes-Hermitage La Matinière , which was aged a year in used oak. It offers a Côte Rôtie-like perfume of spring flowers, bacon fat, raspberries, and toasted spices to go with a medium-bodied, seamless, fleshy, undeniably delicious style. Despite plenty of upfront charm, it has solid tannins as well and will keep for 5-7 years. (12/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Stunning aromatic range on the nose, with rosemary and lavender herbal character as well as black-pepper spice, black-cherry fruit and a savoury, leather note. Impressive and opulent. 17/20 points. (RH) (11/2018)

This has an exceptionally expressive nose of flowers, meat, smoke and raspberries. With some time in a decanter, it unveils the savory side of Syrah, with notes of dried herbs, black pepper and blackberry confiture. This is a precise representation of northern Rhône Syrah that pairs wonderfully with garlic-heavy dishes.

Ferraton has really come on the scene in the last few years under the stewardship of Michel Chapoutier. The overall set has developed in richness, weight and superb regional character. This entry level Crozes is one of the superb values in their entire portfolio. Pure Syrah, this has an explosive nose of lavendar, incense and spicy red fruit. The palate has weight but is not too heavy, the tannins are supple. This is a wonderful drink now but should continue to evolve and develop for a decade more. All this and it's under $20? You'd be hard pressed to find a better Syrah value, this classic and pure, anywhere else in the world.
