2018 Château de L'Ou Côtes du Roussillon Rouge

SKU #1446578 90 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The classic 2018 Cotes Du Roussillon Chateau De L'Ou is a terrific, fruit-forward beauty based on 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache brought up all in tank. It has ample blackberry and black raspberry fruit characteristics as well as notes of ground pepper and candied violets, medium to full body, a round, opulent texture, and terrific length. It's ideal for drinking over the coming 3-4 years, and I suspect it will keep even longer. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

K&L Notes

Severine Bourrier, together with her husband Philippe own and operate the Chateau de l’Ou in France’s Rousillon region. Named “L’Ou” or “egg” due to the oval shape of the property, this little Chateau and it’s owners have pushed forward both the reputation and quality of biodynamic winemaking in the region. Severine studied viticulture in Bordeaux, but moved to the Roussillon after meeting her husband Philippe at a wine fair. She makes wines of incredible complexity masked by a friendly and easy-drinking exterior. If you’re really looking to drink well-crafted, top notch wine at a bargain, Severine’s wines are the way to go. The 2018 Château de l’Ou Côtes de Roussillon Rouge is composed of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache.

Aromas of blueberry, black cherry and smoked meats jump out of the glass followed by a full-bodied palate with ripe fruit, fresh acidity and well-integrated tannin. The wine finishes with lingering fruit and an undercurrent of black olive and smoked meat. I can easily see this wine standing up to lamb or steak, but at the same time it is so friendly that it makes a good choice for a weeknight grill-out.
