2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet

SKU #1447325 92 points James Suckling

his is impressive from the outset with a wealth of white peaches and melon, as well as green mangoes and subtle hazelnut notes. The palate has a very long, fresh delivery of fine and open-knit peaches and lemons. Plush and open. Drinking well already. (1/2019)

92 points Wine Spectator

Features a sleek core, revealing lemon, apple and baking spice flavors, with soft touches around the edges. This white emphasizes structure and lemon and spice notes on the finish. Drink now through 2024. (BS) (8/2019)

91 points Vinous

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village is a little fuller on the nose than the Meursault Village, featuring attractive aromas of hazelnut and orange pith – actually quite Meursault-like in style. The palate is well balanced with impressive concentration, especially for a Village Cru, and crammed full of green apples and pears. A light saline note emerges toward the satisfying finish. Excellent.(NM) (1/2019)

The 2017 Puligny villages from Joseph Drouhin is also very tasty in this vintage, offering up a ripe and bright bouquet of apple, peach, citrus zest, chalky soil tones, acacia blossoms and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, open and drinking well already, with a good core and complexity, solid acidity and a long, juicy and quite bouncy finish. Again, this is quite forward in style, but has good soil signature to go along with its lovely fruit and will be a charmer from the moment it is released. Bottled in early October. (Drink between 2018-2035) 90+ (12/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Inviting leesy/creamy aroma with citrus and pear fruit. Crisp acidity and quite firm in texture. Deep rather than refined. Long, like all these 2017s. 16.5/20 points. (JH) (11/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village reveals a pretty bouquet of white peach, lemon, citrus blossom and beeswax. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, elegant and glossy, with an open-knit, succulent profile. This will drink well on release. This important house—and, with fully 73 hectares of its own vines, domaine—has produced a lovely range of quintessentially elegant wines in the 2017 vintage. With the reds, particular brilliance emerges from Chambolle-Musigny, and the whites are successful across the board, exemplifying the succulent, tender house, an aesthetic deeply in sync with the inherent profile of the vintage. Véronique Drouhin, with whom I tasted this year, briefly summarizes the growing season and the wines it yielded as "early, warm, sunny, dry and charming"—an account that is hardly necessary to embellish. Readers will likely have noted that the Drouhin team are using increasingly large percentages of whole clusters this year, something that the wines—with the sole exception of a slightly carbonic Clos de Bèze—integrate very well. When Puligny “hits,” it has this refined sense of pristine mountain water flowing over smooth stones, and orchard fruit picked at its peak of ripeness, all rolled into a fine white wine. The 2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin has all the above-mentioned attributes in spades. This wine is pure and fresh with mineral notes woven throughout its orchard fruit-dominated core. A truly enjoyable white that personifies what Puligny-Montrachet should strive to attain.
