2013 Miguel Merino Reserva Rioja

SKU #1450388

Neal Martin writes: "Located in the village of Briones in Rioja Alta, Bodegas Miguel Merino offer exemplary modern Rioja wine sourced from their own Tempranillo vines planted between 1931 and 1963 at an altitude of 550 meters above sea level. The Tempranillo vines are augmented by small plots of Mazuelo and Graciano that are occasionally bottled separately. The wine is then matured in a combination of new American, French and Hungarian oak."

It doesn’t get much more serious than this for reds under $35. After two years in barrel and another five in bottle, this tempranillo is seamless, sexy and ready for a fine filet mignon. It has beautiful toasty red fruit, a touch of savory sweet earth, truffles, exotic spice, and an extra long finish. Put a few away, this is built to last.

Winner number two (for Reservas, at least) from Miguel Merino! Like the Vitola, this Rioja has a wonderful nose of red fruits and baking spices. On the palate, a bit darker, with dark red, almost black, fruit and (lightly) peppery spices, tannin and acidity. Hint of truffles, as well. Just lovely!

Consistently one of K&L's best direct imports (and also one of the best dollar-for-dollar buys), Miguel Merino makes Rioja how Rioja should be made. Rich and bright, with solid lines connecting red fruit on the front end to the classic, dusty, sweet earth finish, and plenty exotic spice layered on throughout. This is a versatile pairing for food, with an incredibly long finish. Drinking it now is hedonism at its finest, but given some time it has the potential to do great things. Buy by the case to experience both.
