2000 Chateau de la Grangerie 18 Year Old "Cask #67" K&L Exclusive Armagnac (750ml)

SKU #1462129

The stupendous brandies coming out of the Chateau de la Grangerie estate in the northern area of the Tenareze is one of the most picturesque and intriguing estates in all of Gascogne. The beautiful Chateau built around a 12th century monastery. It is in the old chapel where the Langalerie family stores all of their armagnac. The old open floor building is the perfect aging environment for the wonderful Ugni Blanc eau-de-vie being distilled here. Fewer than 10 barrels are made every year, but they also cultivate grains, plums and grapes for wine production. This allows them some leeway to purchase new oak for the elevage of their armagancs, which are some of the most elegant and complex in the area. The nuance as compared to some of the more powerful and rustic brandies found in the region comes as much from the care the Antoine and Robert Langalerie take in production as much as the uniquely sandy soils, which resemble much more the easts to the west in Bas-Armagnac. The result is an eau-de-vie that hits its stride extremely early compared to many of its neighbors. We've always loved the freshness and grace that's found in this special brand at between 15-20 years of age. So much so that we bought two casks just a year a part. Both of these are true single barrels, never blended with similar casks of the same vintage as is typical.

As an obvious contrast to the spirit driven, vibrant '99, this lovely 18 year old Armagnac shows much more oak and savory character than it's sibling. That said it doesn't get into the over the top range that some of the other estates we love show and has a rustic elegance that seems to be ubiquitous at this old Chateau. A nose of fresh blue plums, charred oak, barrel spice, roasting stone fruit. On the palate the oak is not at all overwhelming and balanced by wonderful stewed plum and apricot. It's long and building toward a core of powerful spice. It lies somewhere on the spectrum between great bourbon and amazing old highland single malt. An absolutely gorgeous example of this excellent estate very similar to the awesome '01 14-year-old we sold back in 2015. The age statement is up 4 years, but the price is only up $10! How is it possible? I have no idea.

The genius and beauty of vintage Armagnac shows in the different tastes of the 1999 Grangerie and the 2000.The 2000 is classic (see the review for the 1999 for the contrast) with a beautiful floral nose. In the mouth it is rich and round with subtle stone fruit flavors. The 2000 is pretty and easy and should please any Armagnac drinker.

Pretty and rich nose with lots of toasty vanilla and hints of something more floral are wrapped a spicy and oaky core of ripe fruit. Soft and deeply fruity on the palate with custard-covered fruit that then gives way to barrel spices with a peppery finish.
