2018 First Drop "Mother's Milk" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

SKU #1485650 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark The aromas and flavors of plums, smoked meat, raw meat, cloves, nutmeg and berries are sumptuous. Full body, round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Yet reserved and focused at the finish. Inner quote mark (11/2019)

92 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark A meld of fruit from a whopping 15 separate Barossan and Eden Valley vineyards, cold soaked and fermented closed, to capture fruit essences. 8-12 days on skins, the fermentation finished in oak before a further 12 months in neutral French oak. This is an approach that serves the buxom blue fruit notes, grapey intensity and soaring florals very well. A polished chassis. No components in the way of the other. Slurpy, gently peppery and delicious. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Deepest cherry red. Intense aroma of black fruit as well as a slightly smoky reductive note and the freshness of wild scrubland herbs and black pepper. 'Soft and slurpy' is about right, with masses of sweet black fruit – blackberry and blackcurrant – smooth, smoochy tannins. A wine to sink into. The absolute opposite of elegant austerity but none the worse for that. At the risk of offending those who loved floppy-eared creatures, I can imagine this with rabbit stew. Though Matt Gant suggests rump steak, mushroom sauce, chips and salad. That would work too. At the very end, black olive savour cleans up the finish. (JH) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Tobacco, liquorice, dark cherry and hints of mint are dominant in this wine. There is great purity of fruit here and it glides down the palate like silk. A real bargain for those looking for classic Australian Shiraz that is not too ripe or sweet.

I tasted at First Drop Wines in the Barossa Valley in one of my first weeks in the industry. They've got a fun, exciting cellar door and staff, and that happy ethos is baked into every one of their wines. A wine that disappears as soon as you open it. Fruity and light, with a smoky frame, and great for barbecue or burgers.

First Drop wines had been on my radar for a while. They’re hard to miss, their quirky and eclectic labels stop you dead in your tracks when browsing across a wine shelf. But First Drop is about more than just packaging and the proof is in this bottle, this vintage. I was totally blown away by the 2018 Mother’s Milk. There’s so much about this wine I love. The aromas are meaty, with black plum, black cassis and a hint of rosemary and spice. On the palate, you’ll find richness countered by bright and fresh acidity with a beautiful black raspberry note and tannins that trail from the mid-palate to the finish. This is absurdly great value. One of the best Shiraz to hit my desk this year.

Not an Australian Shiraz fan? Have no fear! This isn't the punch-in-the-face kind of Shiraz that can often be found in southern Australian. The beautifully textured 2018 "Mother's Milk" Barossa Valley Shiraz from First Drop is exponentially more silky smooth than you'd expect, and goes down easy from first sip to the very end of its finish. It is both juicy and syrupy at the same time, with a stunning aroma profile of cooked meat, rich plum, clove, and very ripe blackberries. Its textured palate is well-rounded with notes of blue and black fruit, but isn't inherently fruit-forward. A mouthwatering acidity perfectly balances out the richer notes and fuller mouthfeel, encouraging you to partake in a second glass... and maybe a third.
